I saw Meat Puppets at a small, not sold out, show on Sunday. I dislike the phrase intimate show because surely more sales means more cash for the band. More cash, well deserved in most cases. With Meat Puppets, being in a small venue instead of feeling intimate, felt modest, for a band whose influence is massive in scope. The band along with being hugely fun entertainment to watch, played incredibly well, smiling and endlessly riffing through a two hour set with impeccable grace.

Metal Circus sounds like the point between ‘old husker du’ and ‘new husker du’. Still strong elements of hardcore punk, but burgeoning melodic elements that front their later works. So fun.

The window from the cover is located in the Milton Building on 5th St E, near the corner of Wacouta in downtown St. Paul. There is an interesting post about it here. Looks completely different from the outside/in 2008. The street across from it hasn’t changed by the looks of things though.

It’s probably safe to say that a couple of years back, no one would have expected to hear this. Never the less, the song and album is here and it’s pretty good. Eclectic mix of covers with guests (Caleb Benjamin of Tweak Bird for Best Friend)

Melvins are also off on a tour playing two days in each location. They play Lysol, Eggnog & Houdini in full day one and Bullhead and Stoner Witch day two (at least on the dates I’m seeing anyway). It’ll be my first time seeing them and though, as far as I know, they’re still fairly active touringwise, it’ll be pretty special seeing the albums played in full.

Over the past couple of years The Pastels have, slowly but surely, become one of my favourite bands. Stephens voice is one which, for me, took a little bit of getting used to. The slow, subtlety to his voice is beautiful, if maybe an acquired taste, and is only accentuated in the gentle song lyrics he writes. ‘Check My Heart’ is a new single bathed in the same warmth that resonates through all their songs. Though 16 (ish? idk) years have past since their last full release (not counting their suburb collaboration with Tenniscoats) the song continues the same wonderful ethos found in albums prior. Perfect sunny day music.

I’m really, really looking forward to the album now and am hoping for some UK dates outside of festivals to crop up!

On Sunday I saw Dinosaur Jr., so beforehand I listened to a bunch of albums and watched some of their music videos.

The gig was great. The sound was loud, stage cramped and the setlist included many of my favourite tracks from a variety of old and new works. Barlow was drenched in sweat, whilst Mascis seemed almost dry. I only wish they’d have played Raisans.

So I watched a bunch of their videos and the ‘Watch The Corners’ one stood out for me personally for a reason I can’t quite work out. The simplicity of the storytelling is at a nice pace and I like idea of the pixels and the use of Tim knocking over tubs of mayo and breaking things in a swimming pool. Not my favourite track from the album, which I think Lou takes for Rude, but a good video.

I’m having a bit of a 90s week, having seen Dinosaur Jr., The Pharcyde also and Thurston Moore tonight! exited

Jon Brion makes Elliott feel very at ease it seems and I always enjoy him best when it’s just him and a guitar (though I love him whatever/whenever). Makes me sad we don’t have shows like this. It’d be like a really laid back pleasant living room gig every week or so.
